Final Pieces

These are a mixed range of my best images from my three shoots. In different ways all can be linked into my exam question topic of 'The Journey', such as the modes of transportation and the shot types I have used to influence the topic. My images are also linked into my preparatory work such as my photographers research because all have influences and aspects from specific photographers I have written about, for example Lee Friedlander, Robert Franks, William Eggleston and Don McCullin. Lee Friedlander was a big influence within my work as I used both 'America by car' and 'Street photography' photo shoots, however Eggleston can be seen within the image of the signs in the street and McCullin due to the fact I have focused in some of my shoots largely on roads. I think all of the images above reflect the best work I have done throughout my three shoot exams.

Computer Experiment

Before-
After-
I used the quick selection tool to select the bus, then I copied and pasted in numerous times. With the copied images I placed them in positions to look as if the bus was moving. This was the purpose of my experiment to see whether of not I would be able to make the bus look as though it is in motion. I think in some ways this worked but that there are probably better ways to retrieve a smoother looking result.

Work Record- Shoot 3: Journey by Horse

What I hope to achieve-
With this shoot I hope to create a different view on how journeys can be taken. Every other one of my shoots have aspects of motor vehicles as an idea of how the journey can be taken, however with this shoot I am hoping to be able to use a horse as the means of transportation. I am hoping to get the animal and rider in motion of walk, trot, canter and galloping, the range of speeds of motion will be evident in the photo and create different feels. I am hoping to edit this shoot in colour with an enchanted undertone feel, which will obviously be done in Photoshop. Im hoping to show a wide range of skills within the editing stages, for example the use of tools that I haven't used in any of my other shoots. The overall photo should look natural but with little aspects of fairytale weaved throughout, the reason I want the enchanted feel in this shoot is because horses are largely connected to fairytale stories, therefore I felt it would be nice to incorporate that into the images.

What I actually achieved-
I was able to create my images showing a journey by horse, through different motions such as walk and canter. I also used a variety of shot types to get different points of view, I felt this worked well and created a more unique photo, in some senses. During the editing stage I managed to pull in a diverse set of skills, for example I was able to take the sky from photo which was blue and clear and merge it into another photo without creating fraying between the bushes. I feel like the extra bit of colour from the sky matched with the rest of the image worked well, brightening it up making it feel more like a fairytale, which again was what I was hoping to do. I did however originally think that I would be including and creating extra fairytale like aspects for the image, however this didn't work as well as I was hoping and left them out of the finished image.

This is my favourite photo out of all of my own, this is because I managed to switch the sky from a dark grey and gloomy colour into the light blue fairytale kind of sky that I wanted. I also really like this image because there are many indications that both horse and rider are taking part in a journey. The way the horses legs are one in front of the other shows that they are travelling and the path indicates a route in which they are following. Also the path leads right into the camera lens, which again I think looks really nice. The log, when looking closely at it looks fake and cartoon like, which links in with how I had originally wanted to create an enchanted feel. I do feel as thought the journey could have been made even clearer throughout this image, perhaps if the path could be seen from behind the horse as well as in front of it. Overall, I'm happy with the work I have put into creating this image.

Personally, this is not one of my favourite photos and this is because the white of the sky behind the trees blends in with the white fur of the horse making him not stand out enough in the photo. I do however like that he is in mid stride because it shows a clear indication of movement and the fact that they are on a journey. I think there is a lot of room for improvement with this photo even though it does show aspects of my exam question topic.

I used an Olympus camera and an Olympus 12-40 mm f2.8 camera lens. My camera was set at shutter speed 1/1000secs, f3.2 and Iso 200. The f stop being at 3.2 created a small amount of depth of field with some of my images which had been taken from a low angle. In the editing stage I took two different paths with different images. For the first path which created more of the enchanted feel I started off by cropping the photo with the blue sky down so that all was left was the sky. I then selected and copied the image that I wanted the sky to be changed on. Next I pasted the photo onto the image of the sky and then duplicated the image so that there was two layers of the same photo. I then used the polygonal lasso tool, once having turned the top layer of and selected the original layer, to select any part of my image that didn't have any sky in. I then added a layer mask onto the layer which basically merged both my photos together. However, I then turned my top copy layer back on, this made the photo look normal again, I then directly double clicked onto the copy layer thumbnail, which opened up a layer style dialogue box.
With this box I adjusted the leaver for the bar that said this layer, doing this merged the blue sky into the image and still allowing any tree branches to sit in front of the sky. Lastly I adjusted the transition between the photos to remove any fringing that may have happened.

What am I going to do next-
Next I would like to focus on taking images focusing on places, I would like to do this by travelling around to different cities and towns taking photographs of any unique building, attractions and the people that inhabit the places. I would want it to show my own personal journey through different locations and everything that I would have seen whilst travelling. Im not too sure in how I would like to edit them but I would want it to reflect how the places made me feel, to give an overall feeling to the photo.

I really enjoyed photographing during this shoot and I feel that I used a lot of different skill sets that cannot be seen in any of my other shoot, which I am rather happy about. However I do not feel that every image from this shoot shows a clear indication of a journey, even though a journey can be seen. Overall, I am happy with how this shoot turned out but feel theres room for improvement.

Work Record- Shoot2: Looking Back

What I hoped to achieve-
Throughout this shoot I am hoping to subtly develop my idea of photographing from my car by taking the images from the view of my side mirror. I am hoping that this will capture the scenes and roads  from behind. The road and slight influence of my car within the photographs will create the idea of a journey, however the main way that these images will hopefully convey my exam question topic is through the use of editing techniques. I would like for multiple imagery to be used within my editing stages, the reason I want to use multiple imagery is because it would be an interesting way of showing the change in location within one combined image. I hope to combine a maximum of three images together as I feel that any more than this would create confusion for the viewer and not show one journey clearly. The first shoot I did for my unit 4 photography was influenced by Lee Friedlanders 'America by car' photography series and in this shoot I hope to use more original ideas and develop the shoot to my own view. I would like for the photos to be edited in colour as this would be contrasting with the shoot from which I am developing, also it will give the photos a happier quality, which is what I would like.

What I actually achieved-
With my images I was able to achieve a diverse set of photos that show a clear indication of development from any other shoot I have already done. The use of mirrors allowed me to capture roads and the scenery and created a frame within the photographs, which I think looks really lovely. Also because of the camera settings that I had used depth of field was a technique that was implied within all of my images and even though it was planned it looks really nice in the photos as it draws attention to the clearer part of the image. Whilst editing the images I found that some looked better singularly rather than in multiple imagery therefore I decided that some should just be left as one image. The images were edited in colour and I think that this was a good choice as it shows the change in location more precisely. I believe that my goal of showing a journey within these images was met and that the photographs have included all aspects that I priorly was hoping to. I do feel that there is even more room for development within this type of shoot and at some point I would like to explore further into this.

I placed these images in chronological order as it would tell the viewer about the journey in a clearer way and would show them that a journey had taken place. Each image shows a different location whilst I was travelling from Sawbridgeworth to my house, the use of roads and other cars also implies travel which is a common part of taking a journey. I like how the layout of the images leads straight from one to the other and think that it is a basic and effective way of pointing to the next image. I think that multiple imagery was a good choice for this shoot and that it is a unique way to show a journey. I was very happy with the photographs that I had taken and felt that even on their own they were a good indication of my topic, however I also think that the use of the technique brought it onto a higher level.

I love this image for many reasons, one of which is because the road shows a lot of depth and creates the illusion that the photo travels on for miles. I also really love how there is only one colour practically present throughout the whole image but the fact that it doesn't make the photo look dull or dark. You can focus more with this photo as well because you can see the depth of field around the edge which focuses your attention on the reflection within the centre of the image. I really like this photo also, although I don't think it shows a journey in such an obvious way compared to my other image above. Overall, I am happy with this image and how it looks. camera lens

I used an Olympus camera with an Olympus M12-40mm f 2.8 camera lens to take these images and my camera settings were at ISO 200, F2.8 and shutter speed 1/1000 secs. The low f stop allowed for the depth of field to be incorporated within the images, therefore my decision to use it through this shoot. During the editing stages I chose to edit the singular photos first by adjusting the levels, curves and the vibrance to +15 and saturation to +5, doing this made the colours in the images brighter but still with a natural look. After this I then changed the size of each of the images so they all had a width of 15cm and a height of 11.67cm. To then create the multiple imagery I pressed auto-select in the top left hand corner, I then selected file new to create a new blank page and changed the size of the document to width of 60cm and height of 11.80 cm. To get each singular image onto the blank page I just held onto the image, I then dragged and dropped it onto the blank tab. Once all of the images I wanted to include into the multiple imagery where there I arranged them into chronological order. There was a little space left over on the bottom layer, so to create the illusion that it was one whole photo I just cropped and left over, unnecessary part out.

The denotation that I wanted to show in this shoot was looking at what was being left behind as the journey moved forward, which was done through the use of the side mirror. I wanted the imply that a journey was moving forward by showing what has already been passed. The road and scenes happing is the main show for the journey within this photography shoot.

What am I going to do next-
I feel that with this shoot I have developed from an idea and created a series of images that are more unique and original, therefore I am happy with this shoot and feel that what I have done to develop the way I show a journey has been good. For my next shoot I would like to focus on something completely different all together, I feel like I have worked quite a bit on journeys regarding roads and vehicles and feel that exploring a different route would be what I would want to do within my next photo shoot.

I am really happy with all of the images that I have photographed and edited throughout this shoot and feel that the development I show is clear and strong. I believe that my exam question topic of 'The Journey' can be sent through these images.
